Collection Summary

Collection Title
Buckingham Palace Programmes (1837-60)
Unique Identifier
Cup.403.w.6.
Description
A collection of 35 Royal Programmes of Private Concerts, given at Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace and Gloucester House, London between 1837 and 1860, compiled by Elizabeth Costa of 134 Warwick Street, London, and held as a bound volume.

The concerts on 5 June 1837 and 30 June 1853 took place at Kensington Palace and Gloucester House, respectively. The remainder were held at Buckingham Palace.

All of these events were two-part concerts of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Italian operatic excerpts, accompanied by Michael Costa.

The concert on 12 June 1840 featured Signor Lablache and Signor Rubini performing with members of the Royalty and nobility (including H.R.H. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert). The programme for this event is prefaced by a handwritten note, which would appear to suggest that the music formed part of a dinner party (the guests at which are listed). Also bound with this item is a handwritten letter (Edinburgh, Oct. 6th), in which the author comments on the singing of Her Royal Highness.

The remaining concerts were given entirely by professional performers, of whom the following (listed alphabetically) appeared on at least three occasions.
