Description
There are currently three collections of programmes in the archives of individuals held at Clare College:
Geoffrey Fletcher Hickson
Frank Percy Haines
Hardy Campbell Lee
CCPP/HIC/1: Geoffrey Fletcher Hickson (1900 – 1978)
A Clare alumnus, Hickson was a member of the Music Society Committee from 1920. He served as Secretary to the University Board of Extra Mural Studies (1928 – 1967), a Fellow of Fitzwilliam College from 1963 – 1967 and was Mayor of the City twice: 1947 – 49 and 1962 – 63.
The collection of programmes consists of nine for smoking concerts between 1919 and 1927, and 13 May Week concerts from 1920 to 1938. Hickson was a violinist and took part in all the concerts.
CCPP/HAI/3: Frank Percy Haines (1889 – 1917)
Baritone and Organ Scholar at Clare, Haines’s tutors were Charles Stanford, A. H. Mann and Charles Wood. In 1912 he was made sub-organist at King’s College. During service in WWI he formed the first Concert Party and the 37th Division Band (all of whom were professional musicians). He was killed in action on the Hindenburg Line on 16th June 1917.
The majority of the 50 programmes in the collection are for University Music Club Saturday evening chamber concerts, but there are also a few for Clare Music Society smoking and May Week concerts. Performers included Arthur Bliss, E. J. Dent, Eugene Goossens, Frank Haines, A. H. Mann, Cyril Rootham and Sedley Taylor.
CCPP/LEE: Hardy Campbell Lee (1910 – 1994)
An undergraduate from 1929 – 1932, Lee was very active musically playing the violin in and/or attending concerts for most college music societies, CUMS and CUMC. Following his War service he took an LLB at Cornell University but later settled in Los Angeles working in investment banking. In 1975, he and his wife returned to Cambridge where he once again became actively involved in music-making.
The programmes are bound into a single scrapbook with an index, which Lee presented to the College Archive in 1988. The majority are for concerts at Clare by the College Music Society of which Lee was Secretary and then President, and for many of these, reviews from the Lady Clare magazine are attached. In addition, there are programmes for many other college music societies, the 1930 CUMS Festival of British Music, a production of the Fairy Queen at the New Theatre in 1931, and of Euripides’ The Bacchae also at the New Theatre in May 1930. Performers included: Geoffrey Beaumont, Margaret Field-Hyde, William Glock, Leon Goossens, Hardy Campbell Lee, Boris Ord, Philip Radcliffe, Michael Redgrave, Cyril Rootham and Percy Young.
