Collection Description
Collection name
Sir Arthur Bliss Archive concert programme collection
Unique identifier
Description
A collection of some 650 programmes for concerts of performances of the works of Sir Arthur Bliss (1891 – 1975) is held as part of the Bliss Archive. Programmes are accompanied in the majority of cases by other materials associated with the performances including press cuttings, publication announcements, arrangements for recordings or performances and copies of correspondence between either Sir Arthur or Lady Trudy Bliss and those concerned with the events.
Single work in a concert
The programmes are presented here in date order of composition of the work divided as follows, to reflect the physical storage of the material:
Section 1: 1907 – 1928
Section 2: 1929 – 1936
Section 3:1937 – 1954
Section 4: 1955 – 1974
A small number of programmes form a supplementary collection in a box file: these are included in the main sequence with a note of their location.
Multiple works in a concert
Where more than one work is performed as part of a concert, the archive holds a copy of the programme for each work at the appropriate position in the main chronological sequence. These are recorded as a separate list, in order of the date of the concert, giving the year of composition for each work to aid location.
