Unique identifier
Description A collection of one bound volume of programmes from the New Philharmonic Society, 1854 to 1855. The collection includes 31 programmes, as well as performance ephemera such as press cuttings and a season prospectus. The collection contains complete programmes for the 1854 season – though there is only a flier and music list for the 5th concert (24th May) rather than a full programme – which contained six concerts in total. The collection contains complete programmes for the 1855 season, which featured six concerts in total.

The programmes feature concerts given at St. Martin's Hall (1854) and Exeter Hall (1855); a number of concerts were given in aid of London hospitals. Some programmes in the collection feature analytical programme notes, and some of these include musical examples. In addition, some programmes include the words of items sung at the concert.

The programmes largely feature orchestral music, with some arias. The 1855 season includes some choral music, which related to the extra performing space available at Exeter Hall. Concert in the 1854 season were conducted by Herr Lindpaintner or Dr. Wylde; concerts in the 1855 season were conducted by Dr. Wylde or Berlioz, who conducted the final two concerts of the season.
