Collection Description

Collection name McCann Collection: United Kingdom (1890-1899)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of one box of programmes from the McCann collection, from 1890 to 1899. The collection contains programmes from concerts given in the United Kingdom. The programmes were collected by the concert agent Norman McCann (1920-1999).

The contents of the collection are as follows:

London:
St. James's Hall – 16 programmes
The collection includes four programmes from concerts organised by the Philharmonic Society, a programme from a "Richter Concert" and a programme from a "Saturday Popular Concert".

Queen's Hall – 34 programmes
There are twenty three programmes from concerts organised by the Philharmonic Society. The collection also includes one programme from the first season of Promenade Concerts (1895). One programme in the collection is from a concert that took place in the "Small hall".

National Sunday League Concerts – "Sunday evenings for the people" – 8 programmes
The collection contains programmes from concerts which were organised by the National Sunday League, promoted under the caption "Sunday evenings for the people". The programmes are from the following venues: Shoreditch Town Hall (4); Bermondsey Town Hall (2 copies); Stratford Town Hall; Horns Assembly Rooms, Kennington Park.

Other London venues:
Royal Albert Hall (2); Alexandra Palace; Pioneer Club, 5 Grafton Street; St. Alban the Martyr, Brooke Street, Holborn; 12 Belgrave Square; Grafton Galleries (2 copies); Portman Rooms; St. Mark’s, Kennington; 17 Lowndes Street, Belgrave Square; Albany Hall, Kingston-on-Thames; Vestry Hall [Hampstead]; Highbury Athenaeum; Prince’s Hall, Piccadilly; Westminster Town Hall; Brompton Hospital; Imperial Institute [South Kensington – now the site of Imperial College, South Kensington campus, where the Queens Tower is the only surviving structure of the original Institute buildings].

In addition, there is a programme from "St. Martin's Town Hall". It is assumed that this venue was in London, possibly near to/on St. Martin’s Lane, Westminster. There is also a programme where the venue has not been printed on to the programme, but a pencil annotation indicates that the venue was "Hampstead High School for Girls".

Edinburgh:
Scottish Orchestra – 11 programmes
There are eight programmes from concerts given in the McEwan Hall, from the twelfth and thirteenth seasons (1898-1899 and 1899-1900 respectively). In addition, there is one programme from the twelfth season of concerts, which does not specify a venue. There is one programme from the eleventh season (1897), and another programme from a concert given in 1895. These concerts took place in the Music Hall.

Henley-upon-Thames:
St. Mary's Hall – 9 programmes
The collection contains seven individual programmes, with two programmes duplicating another two programmes within the collection.

Other Henley-upon-Thames venues:
Badgemore House (2); Remenham School.

Barnsley:
Public Hall, Harvey Institute – 6 programmes

Other provincial venues:
Town Hall, Portsmouth; Campden Town Hall; Temperance Hall, Leicester; Corn Exchange, Northampton; Theatre Royal, Colchester; Masonic Hall, Birmingham; Drill Hall, Derby; Farnham Institute; New Examination Schools [Oxford]; Town Hall, Leeds; Theatre Royal, Nottingham; Albert Hall, Leeds; Assembly Rooms, Bath; Free Trade Hall, Manchester (2); Public Hall, Morriston; Morely Temperance Hall.

There is a programme from a concert entitled "St. Thomas's Hospital Nurses Concert". It is likely that this concert took place at St. Thomas's Hospital, London. There is a programme from an unspecified venue in Dilton Marsh. There is also a programme from a "Richter Concert", where the venue is unspecified. There are two other programmes from concerts where the venue has not been specified.
