Collection Description

Collection name McCann Collection: Egypt (1944-1945)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of one box of programmes from the McCann Collection. The collection contains programmes from concerts given outside the United Kingdom and were collected by the concert agent Norman McCann (1920-1999). The collection is part of a one box of programmes entitled “Middle East programmes”, where the programmes from Egypt occupy most of the box.

The collection contains programmes from Egypt, 1944 to 1945. The programmes are divided between concerts given in Cairo and Alexandria. A significant amount of programmes are directly related to the Second World War; concerts were held in cultural and community centres for allied forces personnel. Another facet of this connection is the involvement of ENSA – who organised a number of concerts, whose programmes are featured in this collection. The majority of programmes are from solo recitals. The remainder are chiefly orchestral concerts, which often feature the Middle East Symphony Orchestra or Middle East Light Symphony Orchestra.

Cairo:
Music for All – 29 programmes
These programmes date from 1944 and 1945. The centre was located at 3 Sharia Maarouf. It provided a cultural centre for servicemen and women, independent of their rank.

There are two festival prospectuses from a Beethoven festival, and one from a Bach-Mozart Festival. These included concerts held in the Garrison Theatre, Ewart Memorial Hall, Oriental Hall and Music for All.

Alexandria:
