Collection name McCann Collection: Austria (1927-1989)

Description A collection of one box of programmes from the McCann Collection. The collection contains programmes from concerts given outside the United Kingdom and were collected by the concert agent Norman McCann (1920-1999).

The majority of programmes in the collection are from Vienna, with the remainder largely from the Salzburg Festival. A significant amount of programmes in the collection are from concerts given in the 1940s and 1960s.

Vienna (1927-1989)

Wiener Konzerthaus – 29 programmes (1930-1989)
These consist of programmes from the Großer Konzerthaussaal (17 programmes), Mozart-Saal (9 programmes), Schubert-Saal (1 programme) and unspecified programmes from the Konzerthaus (2 programmes). The majority of programmes are from concerts supported by the Wiener Konzerthaus-Gesellschaft. The programmes are chiefly from the 1930s, 1940s and 1960s. There is also a programme from 1944, explicitly linking the concert to the NSDAP (“Nazi party”).

Musikverein – 10 programmes; 1 prospectus
There are nine programmes and one prospectus from the Grosser Musikvereinsaal (1927-1970). In addition, there is one programme from the Brahmssaal, which is undated.

There are five programmes from concerts promoted by the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien. Though the venue is not specified, these concerts were also likely to have taken place in the Musikverein. There is also a programme with no venue printed: this has an annotation “M.V. Saal” and is likely to have been from the Musikverein. There is another programme with no venue, which has the gilt logo of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien.

There are seven programmes and prospectuses from the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival), dating from 1951 to 1978.

There are programmes from opera performances, including performances by the Staatsoper and Vienna Volksoper.

There are five programmes from unspecified venues or programmes from multi-venue tours.

Salzburg

Salzburger Festival – 4 prospectuses; 15 programmes; 1 miscellaneous item (1935-1989)
The collection includes leaflets or prospectuses from the 1962 and 1989 festivals. There are a number of individual programmes from the 1935 and 1989 festivals.

Other Salzburg programmes:
Großes Festspielhaus; Marmorsaal des Schlosses Mirabell; Kaisersaal der Residenz; Rittersaal der Residenz.

Other Austrian towns/cities:
Graz: Stephaniensaal.
Schwechat: Körnerhalle.

There is a programme from a concert which was given in two different towns/cities: the concert was given in the Grosser Festsaal, St. Johann im Pongau, and the Brahmssaal, Vienna.
