Description
A collection of programmes and other material relating to concerts at Wigmore Hall from 1917 to the present day. The collection consists of 161 boxes of material, including programmes, tickets and press reviews. Press reviews are usually filed with the programme of the concert, or around this date if the relevant programme is absent. Some previews, for example for 2002 and 2003, have been collected together and appear at the end of the sequence for the whole year. The collection also includes a substantial number of season or series leaflets, particularly in later years.
Wigmore Hall attracted international performers from its early years. Soloists appearing at the hall within the first 10 years included Busoni, Dohnanyi, Artur Rubinstein and Elisabeth Schumann. Societies that promoted or organised concerts in the early years included the London Chamber Concert Society and the Classical Concert Society. Concerts were also occasionally devoted to one composer, for example a Coleridge-Taylor orchestral concert on 7/12/19. There were memorial concerts to both Puccini and Fauré in 1925, for instance.
The number of programmes in the collection falls for the years of the Second World War. However these years include programmes from, for instance, a series of concerts of French music organised by various French committees and organisations, including the French national committee or French national commissioners.
Most programmes are for concerts of solo recitals or chamber music. There are some programmes for small orchestras, including Jacques orchestra, Kathleen Merritt orchestra and Boyd Neel orchestra in the 1940s.
The collection is dense but not complete. For comparison, the first 40 years (1917-1957) take up only 13 boxes of material; the next 45 years (1958-2003) take about 6 times this number. This is partly caused by the bulk of some modern day programmes – the International Master Series, for instance, contain weighty individual programmes – with an additional factor that the programme coverage of this collection becomes less spasmodic for later years. For example, there are only 5 programmes for 1917, and not many more for 1918, whereas 1998 fills about 4 and a half boxes.
