Description
A collection of one box of programmes from synagogues, from 1926 to 1983. The programmes are from solo recitals, concerts with a mixture of solo items and choral concerts. The programmes represent concerts which featured secular and religious (Jewish) music, often within the same concert.
Contemporary music features in the collection, in programmes from the West London Synagogue from 1938. There is a programme from a concert devoted to the works of Mordecai Sandberg, entitled “Concert of Palestinian Music”; there are two programmes and press cuttings from an organ recital which included world premieres of music by Hindemith.
The collection contains programmes from the following venues:
Finchley Synagogue, Kinloss Gardens: Kinloss Suite; Great Synagogue Hall [Duke’s Place, City of London – this synagogue was built in the eighteenth century and destroyed by the Blitz in 1941]; New London Synagogue [Abbey Road, St. John’s Wood]; West London Synagogue [Upper Berkeley Street].
