Collection Description

Collection name London: Halls: St. John’s Smith Square, programmes (1979-2003)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of seven boxes of programmes from St. John’s Smith Square, from 1979 to 2003. The collection also includes flyers and some press cuttings. However, concert diaries and concert series prospectuses are kept in a separate box, and are catalogued separately.

St. John’s, Smith Square was built in the early eighteenth-century, and was originally a church. The church was severely damaged in 1941, and reconstructed as a concert hall which re-opened in 1969. The collection only contains programmes from the venue’s existence as a concert hall, and also includes programmes from concerts held in the Crypt.

The collection is the densest for the years 1978, 1979 and 1980.The folders for October 1979 and January 1980 contain annotations indicating that these months are complete.

The majority of programmes are from orchestral concerts, choral concerts, chamber music concerts and solo recitals. Other events include opera performances, staged entertainments and lecture-recitals.

Numerous performers and performing groups are represented in the collection. These include the Orchestra of St. John’s Smith Square, Young Musician’s Symphony Orchestra and Midsummer Opera.

The collection contain programmes from concerts organised by the BBC: these include a significant number of programmes from “BBC Lunchtime concerts”. There are also numerous programmes from venue-organised series including “Lunchtime readings and recitals in the crypt” which later became “Lunchtime recitals in the crypt”.
