Collection Description

Collection name London: St. James's Hall (1858-1905)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of programmes from concerts given at St. James’s Hall, London. The programmes date from 1859 to 1905. The collection also contains other items of performance ephemera which include press cuttings, a diary and published lists of works performed at the hall. The collection is divided between Monday and Saturday Popular concerts and concerts which do not form part of this series.

Monday and Saturday Popular Concerts:
Programmes from the Popular Concerts series are treated in different parts of the collection as either one series for Monday and Saturday combined or two separate series. The collection contains programmes from the Monday Popular Concerts from 1859 to 1904. This includes 44 bound volumes of programmes, a substantial number of loose programmes and programmes from Monday concerts that have been bound into mixed volumes. The collection is not complete, but there is at least a representative sample of programmes from most years that the series ran. The collection contains programmes from the Saturday Popular Concerts from 1869 to 1903. This includes 8 bound volumes of programmes, a substantial amount of loose programmes and programmes from Saturday concerts that have been bound into mixed volumes. The collection is not complete. There is a representative sample of programmes from a number of years that the series ran, but there are significant gaps.

General Concerts:
This collection contains programmes from concerts at St. James’ Hall between 1858 and 1905 which did not form part of the Monday Popular Concerts or Saturday Popular Concerts sequence. The latest programme in the collection is from a concert on 11/2/1905: this was the final concert given in the hall. The collection contains a substantial amount of programmes for Richter Concerts (1880 – 1902), London Ballad Concerts (1882 – 1899) and concerts given by the Philharmonic society (1869 – 1882). There is also a separate collection of six programmes donated by Adrian Boult, as well as some correspondence relating to the donation. The programmes are from performances given by the Meiningen Orchestra in 1902.

Arrangement:
The programmes are separated between bound volumes and loose programmes. The loose programmes are separated between “general” programmes and “Monday and Saturday Popular Concerts”. Within each sequence, the programmes are arranged chronologically. The programmes donated by Adrian Boult lie at the end of the chronological sequence. There are various miscellaneous items – for example, undated items, published bibliographic items - distributed at the front and ends of various boxes. The bound volumes are largely divided between “Saturday” and “Monday” concerts: however, not only do some volumes labelled as “Saturday” volumes contain a few “Monday” programmes, and vice versa, but there are also some entirely mixed volumes in the collection. The “Saturday” volumes are chronological in one linear sequence; the “Monday” volumes contain many mini-sequences of volumes, so certain time-spans are represented in more than one volume.
