Collection Description

Collection name London: South Place Institute + Conway Hall (1908-1981)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of 170 programmes from the South Place Institute, London and 50 programmes from Conway Hall. Conway Hall opened in 1929 and is part of the South Place Ethical Society. The whole society moved from South Place, Finsbury to Red Lion Square, Holborn in 1929.

Virtually all of the programmes from the South Place Institute (1908-1929) are from South Place Sunday Popular Concerts: there are also a number of programmes from this series held at the Conway Hall from 1930 to 1935. The concerts in the series (at both venues) were chiefly mixed concerts of chamber music and vocal solos. Typically the concerts contained a few sequences of songs, interspersed with a couple of complete string quartets (or trios, quintets or sextets). The concerts also occasionally contained other solo or duo items as well. The collection of programmes from the South Place Sunday Popular Concerts also contains a few programmes from orchestral concerts: these concerts were given by the South Place Orchestra.

The majority of programmes post-1935 are from South Place Sunday Concerts; there are programmes from this series from 1946 to 1981. These programmes are virtually all from concerts of chamber music, without the vocal elements of the earlier concert series. The majority of chamber music represented is string quartet repertoire. In addition to chamber music concerts, there is a small amount of programmes from purely vocal recitals in the series.

There are a small number of programmes in the collection which are not part of either the South Place Sunday Popular Concerts or the South Place Sunday Concerts. These are a mixture of various recitals and chamber music programmes.

Arrangement:
The programmes are filed chronologically.
