Collection name
London: Private houses (1839-)
Unique identifier
Description
A collection of programmes from private houses in London. The programmes are mainly for recitals, but there are few items from musical talks, opera programmes and programmes from musical meetings. The collection includes programmes from both within private houses and in the gardens of private houses. Some programmes specifically state that the event is private and some programmes take on the physical form of invitations. Other programmes explicitly state the entry cost to the concert; these include both charity concerts and concerts that are likely to have a commercial rationale. The programmes date from 1839 onwards, with the majority of the collection dating from the late nineteenth century up to 1940. There are four programmes dating from 1839 to 1843, of which at least 3 are from "soirees". The collection also contains 14 concerts under the direction of Arnold Dolmetsch; 12 took place at 6 Keppel street, Bloomsbury from 1895 to 1987, and 2 took place at 7, Bayley street in 1898. There are a substantial number of programmes (54) from meetings of the Western madrigal society, which include lists of pieces sung. The first part of this collection is from the 91st and 92nd season of meetings at 12 Lisle street, between 1930 and 1931. The second part of this collection is a complete set of meeting programmes (not including the 1939 festival dinner) from the 93rd to 100th season, between 1931 and 1939.
Arrangement:
The programmes are in unnamed private houses appear first, followed by programmes in named private houses, with multiple venues and unknown venues at the end of the sequence. The programmes in unnamed private houses are arranged numerically by house number, then alphabetically by street name, then arranged chronologically. The programmes in named private houses are arranged alphabetically by house name, then chronologically.
