Description
A collection of programmes from the Palladium and the London Palladium. The theatre was built as the Palladium theatre, and became officially as the London Palladium in 1934. The collection chiefly consists of programmes from 1911 to 1940. The majority of these programmes are from National Sunday League Concerts, and pre-1920 are almost exclusively so. Before 1920, the collection is predominantly from orchestral concerts and concerts by military ensembles. There is a substantial amount of programmes from the London Symphony Orchestra from 1915 to 1917, and quite a few from the New Symphony Orchestra. Military ensembles which gave performances include the Band of HM Coldstream Guards and the Royal Artillery String Band. The programmes from the 1920s and 1930s feature a more balanced mix of orchestral concerts, recitals and chamber concerts. There is a significant amount of programmes from Beethoven recitals given by the pianist Lamond in the 1930s. Post-1970, the programmes are from theatrical forms such as ballet, musicals and pantomime.
