Collection Description

Collection name London: National Gallery (1939-1979)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of 400 programmes (including some duplicates) from concerts that took place in the National gallery. Virtually all of the programmes are from the years 1939 to 1946. These programmes are from the "National Gallery Concerts", a series of daily concerts organised by Myra Hess during the Second World War. The programmes are chiefly for chamber music with a few from chamber orchestral music concerts. The collection is not complete, and contains programmes from approximately a fifth of the total concert series. The collection contains a handwritten list of music from the 1st concert of the series (10/10/39, 4:30 performance) and the concert-programme from the final concert (10/4/46). Programmes for the year 1943 are more comprehensively covered than other years, but are in no way complete.
The collection also contains a few newspaper reviews and articles. In addition, there are 3 copies of the 1944 publication "National gallery concerts in aid of the musicians' benevolent fund: 10th October 1939 – 10th October 1944", which contains a works index and a performers index.

Arrangement:
