Collection Description

Collection name London: London Opera House and Stoll Theatre (1912-1957)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of programmes from the London Opera House and the Stoll Theatre. The London Opera House became the Stoll Picture House in 1917, then the Stoll Theatre in the 1940s. The building was demolished and the site used for the Royalty theatre which opened in 1960 (not to be confused with a different theatre of the same name which shut in 1939).

The collection contains eight programmes from the London Opera House. These date from 1912; the programmes are chiefly from opera but also include a programme from a concert of Wagner’s music. The programmes from the Stoll theatre are chiefly from performances of ballet and opera, and in particular Italian opera. There are also a number of programmes from concerts given in 1945 and 1946. These are mainly from concerts given by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as a few concerts from visiting orchestras. The programmes form the Stoll theatre date from 1945 to 1957.

Arrangement:
Within separate sections for both theatres, the programmes are arranged chronologically.
