Collection Description

Collection name London: Hanover Square Rooms (1821-1872)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of 31 items from the Hanover Square Rooms, London. The collection includes items from variant names of the Hanover Square Rooms, including Queen’s Concert Rooms, New Rooms, King’s Antient Concert Rooms and King’s Concert Rooms. The collection dates from 1821 to 1872, but the majority of programmes are from the 1830s, 1840s and 1850s. The collection contains programmes from concerts organised by various individuals and groups: for example, there are three programmes from the Philharmonic Society and six programmes from the New Philharmonic Society (1856 and 1857).

Virtually all of the programmes in the collection are from concerts of mixed genres: these concerts typically featured arias, songs, overtures and other short items. Exceptions to this include the programmes from the New Philharmonic Society concert series: these are still mixed programmes but the works tend to be longer and more substantial. Works performed at the New Philharmonic Society concerts include the British premieres of Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor and concerts containing Beethoven symphonies.
