Collection Description

Collection name London: Halls: Public Hall, Croydon (1870-1938)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of 38 programmes from Public Hall, Croydon, from 1870 to 1938. The collection includes programmes from "Small Public Hall", "Large Public Hall" and "New Public Hall".

The programmes are largely from orchestral and choral concerts, with a few programmes from recitals and chamber concerts. There are programmes from a variety of organising groups. These include a significant number of programmes from concerts organised by the String-Players Club - a string orchestra, sometimes featuring other instruments alongside the string players.

The collection also contains significant material from concerts associated with Coleridge-Taylor. These include programmes from the series "Coleridge-Taylor Symphony Concerts" (1903-1904) and programmes featuring Coleridge-Taylor's compositions (1903 and 1906). In addition, the earliest programmes from the String-Players Club are from concerts that Coleridge-Taylor conducted. The collection includes a few press cuttings relating to Coleridge-Taylor performances.
