Unique identifier
Description
A collection of programmes from concerts which took place in Foreign institutes, embassies and centres in London. These also include programmes from cultural centres such as the Goethe centre. Coverage is predominantly from the post-1945 era until the 1970s. Programmes are from both concerts organised by the institute/embassy itself and concerts organised by outside institutions or individuals with no association to the institute/embassy. Programmes organised by the institute/embassy itself often have relevance to the culture of the country’s embassy. For instance, some concerts feature music, music styles or instruments indigenous to the home country: for example a concert at the Africa centre features the "Kora", a type of West African stringed instrument. Other concerts feature soloists and groups from the home country: for example, an Argentinian pianist features at a concert partly organised by the Argentine embassy. A few programmes are from concerts organised by international music committees or embassies, where the venue of the concert is not necessarily an institute, embassy or centre. There are also some non-programmes items, including “American music”, a newsletter about American musicians and music in London.
Venues covered are as follows:
Africa centre; American embassy: auditorium; Australia house; Austrian embassy; Austrian institute; Austrian legation; Institute Belge (= Belgian institute); Canada house; Ceskoslovenský Ústav (=Czechoslovak institute); Deutsches Kulturinstitut (later German institute and Goethe institute); Finnish institute; Institut français du Royanne-uni (also known as French institute); Legation of the republic of Hungary; Hungarian cultural institute; Bharatiya vidya bhavan (=institute of Indian culture); Italian institute; Polish embassy; Instituto de españa; Spanish embassy; Venezuelan embassy
Arrangement:
Programmes are organised by alphabetical order of the anglicised version of the name of the country that the embassy/institute is representing. The exception to this is Germany, which filed under "Deutsches" etc. Within venues, programmes are organised chronologically.
