Description
A collection of one box of programmes from St. Paul’s Cathedral, from 1873 to 1997. The collection includes programmes from concerts which took place on the steps of the cathedral and in St. Paul’s Churchyard.
The nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century programmes are from festival services, including London Gregorian Choral Association (1873) and London Church Choir Association (1899 and 1909). There is a significant amount of material from the inter-war years, which includes programmes from memorial services – for instance, Hubert Parry in 1918 – and from musical services of large-scale choral works such as Bach’s B Minor Mass. There are six programmes from the “National Welsh Festival”. These programmes are largely in Welsh, and are from services given on the even of St. David’s Day in 1914 and 1919-1923.
The programmes from 1940 onwards are more diverse than the programmes from the previous years: there are programmes from concerts as well from church services. In addition to concert performances of sacred choral works, there are also programmes from recitals – in particular from organ recitals. Choral concert material includes programmes from concerts given by the University of London Musical Society in the 1950s and material from Berlioz performances in the 1960s. The latter contains programmes from performances of Grande Messe de Morts (Berlioz) conducted by Colin Davis, in 1966 and 1969. The 1969 programme contains loose performance ephemera, including a ticket, reviews and press cuttings. However, there are also a significant amount of programmes from religious services: these include memorial services – for instance, a programme from a service to commemorate Myra Hess in 1965 – celebratory services and special services.
Arrangement:
The programmes are arranged chronologically.
