Description
A collection of one box of programmes from St. Michael’s, Cornhill, from 1922 to 1992. The majority of programmes are from organ recitals or concerts of choral sacred music. Choral music was usually performed by St. Michael’s Singers – founded in 1919 by Harold Darke, and reformed as a small choir in 1946. A number of programmes feature concerts that were conducted by Harold Darke – organist at the church from 1916 to 1966 – or are from his organ recitals. The collection contains a programme from Darke’s “Farewell Concert” (06/06/1966). Large-scale choral works, in particular the works of Bach, feature prominently in the collection. In addition, there are a number of programmes from the 1920s and 1930s which included contemporary or near-contemporary British music, such as the music of Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Parry. The collection includes a small number of programmes from church services and carol services.
The collection also contains prospectuses from the Musical Festival held at St. Michaels. The prospectuses are from the 1920s and 1930s; the earliest prospectus is from the second festival, held in 1922. The festivals consisted of organ recitals and sacred vocal music, the latter performed by the St. Micahel’s Singers.
