A collection of one box of programmes from Southwark Cathedral, from 1921 to 1997. The full name of the cathedral is Cathedral Church of St. Savior and St. Mary Overie, Southwark.
The programmes from the 1920s and 1930s are from church services. Often, these include performances of large-scale choral works, which were given after brief prayers. There are also programmes from a festival – “Musical Festival” – held in the cathedral. These include performances of sacred and secular music, usually choral but including some orchestral works, preceded by prayers.
From the late 1940s, the programmes are more diverse. Though the programmes from the 1940s are generally from performances which were preceded by prayers, by the 1950s the programmes do not specify any liturgical element to the musical performances. The choir is often specified as being either or both the “Southwark Cathedral Choir” or “Southwark Cathedral Special Choir”. There are programmes from concert performances at the Southwark Cathedral Music Festival in the 1950s and concert performances of Bach’s passions from the late 1950s onwards. Concerts entirely consisting of orchestral music are represented in the collection from the 1960s onwards, appearing in significant numbers in the 1970s. From the 1970s onwards, the collection consists largely of choral concerts and orchestral concerts, with other genres and service programmes. Of the choral concert programmes, a number are from performances by the Alexandra Choir.
