Collection Description
Collection name
London: Arts council and British council (1947-1974)
Unique identifier
Description
A collection of one folder of programmes, chiefly from the Arts Council with some British Council items. The programmes date from 1947 through to 1974.
The majority of Arts Council programmes are from concerts that took place at the Arts Council premises, 4 St. James' Square, usually in the Drawing Room/Great Drawing Room. A few items are fromr concerts or recordings organised by the arts council but do not explicitly state that the concert took place at the arts council premises. These are at the end of the arts council sequence. The programmes are sometimes for concerts organised or promoted by the Arts Council itself, but more often they are for concerts associated with external societies whose activities are supported by the arts council. In particular these include the Verdi Society, Park Lane Group/Opera Group and the Mcnaughten new music group. Programmes are from a variety of concert types, but include significant opera performances, for example the first London performance (concert) of Giovanna d’Arco. The majority of programmes are from the 1950s and 1960s.
Arrangement:
Arts council programmes then British council programmes. Within each sequence, the programmes are arranged chronologically.
