Collection Description

Collection name London: Aeolian Hall (1904-1944)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of programmes from the Aeolian Hall, London. The collection also contains a few newspaper reviews and a small amount of items of concert ephemera including tickets and posters.

The programmes are chiefly from chamber concerts. From 1904 to the early teens, the majority of programmes relate to piano recitals or vocal recitals. Other types of chamber music are more frequently represented from the teens onwards, in particular string quartets. There is a significant amount of programmes from concerts given by the London String Quartet, especially in the teens. There are also quite a few programmes from the Philharmonic String Quartet. The collection contains some orchestral programmes, from 1912 onwards. In particular, these orchestral programmes from 1912 till the end of the decade were frequently from a set of “Orchestral Concerts for Young People”. In the collection, however, programmes from orchestral concerts generally occur more frequently in the 1930s and 1940s than other decades. The collection contains a small number of programmes from choral concerts; these a small amount of programmes from the Orianna Madrigal Society. The collection contains programmes from various concert series and festivals. There are a small number of programmes from the Broadwood Concerts from several series dating from 1904 to 1912. There also quite a few from the Gerald Cooper Chamber Concerts, from the mid-1920s to the late 1920s. The Beethoven Festival is represented by a number of programmes for several separate festival years.

The first programme in the collection dates from 11/6/04. The final programme in the collection dates from 28/10/44, after the date which the BBC took over the concert hall for studio use. Though the collection is far from complete, the early years of the hall are reasonably well represented compared to collections for other venues in this era; in contrast, the least complete parts of the Aeolian hall collection are probably the early 1930s and early 1940s.

Arrangement:
The collection is arranged chronologically. Undated programmes are filed at the end of the sequence. Newspaper reviews are kept approximately with programmes of similar or the same dates.
