Collection Description

Collection name Henry Wood: Queen's Hall, Sunday Concerts (1896-1924)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of 26 volumes of programmes from Sunday afternoon concerts at the Queen’s Hall, 1896 to 1924. There are gaps in the collection for the 1899-1900 and 1901-1902 seasons. Though the 1898-1899 season was retrospectively claimed to have been the first, the pattern of afternoon concerts seems to have emerged a few years earlier than this. The programmes contain analytical programme notes.
The collection also contains a separate volume of overall season guide to the concerts from April to July, 1819.

The concerts were organised by the Sunday Concert Society (established in 1898) and subsequently by the Sunday Musical Union (established 1902). The concerts took place on Sunday afternoons in the Queen’s Hall, usually at 3:30 pm. The concerts usually took place weekly, and the seasons lasted from September/October through to April/May/June. For a few seasons, concerts were repeated in their entirety on the same evening.

The majority of concerts featured the Queen’s Hall Orchestra, which changed its name to the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra in 1915. Some early programmes in the collection do not specify the name of the orchestra. The 1904 to 1905 season also included concerts by the London Symphony Orchestra, under a variety of conductors. The majority of concerts from the 1898-1899 season onwards were conducted by Henry Wood. Prior to this, concerts were conducted by Alberto Randegger.

The collection also includes a few miscellaneous programmes from other concerts given at the Queen’s Hall; these include recitals and special Good Friday concerts.
