Collection Description

Collection name Handel festival etc. at Crystal Palace (1857-1880)
Unique identifier
Description A collection of six volumes from the Crystal Palace, London. The collection dates from 1857 to 1880. The collection contains four bound volumes of programmes and two books of music from the “selection” concerts of the 1862 and 1865 Triennial Handel Festivals. The majority of programmes in the bound volumes relate to the Triennial Handel Festival, but the volumes also include programmes from other festivals. The programmes in the collection almost entirely feature concerts conducted by Michael Costa. The collection includes virtually complete sets of programmes from the Triennial Handel Festivals in 1859, 1862, 1865, 1868, 1871, 1874, 1877 and 1880. In addition, the collection includes programmes from festivals of Handel in 1857 and 1858, before the festival became Triennial. The volumes contain programmes which are virtually all from performances of oratorios: other than Handel, there are works by, for instance, Rossini and Mendelssohn in the non-Handel Festival programmes.

Arrangement:
The programmes are arranged chronologically. The music books appear at the end of the bound volumes.
