Description
A collection of 25 programmes and prospectus from Southend-on-Sea, from 1923 to 1984. The majority of items are from the 1920s and 1950s.
The following venues are represented in the collection: Southend Central Library; Cliffs Bandstand; Cliffs Pavilion; Cliff Town Church; Kursaal Ballroom; Odeon Theatre; Palace Hotel; Queen's Hall. Various performing groups are represented in the collection and include the following: Charles Shadwell and his Orchestra (Cliffs Bandstand, various dates in 1950); BBC Concert Orchestra (Kursaal Ballroom, 1950s); Southend on Sea Madrigal Society (Palace Hotel, 1923); Purcell Musical Union (Queen's Hall, 1924).
In addition, there is a festival programme from the Southend Musical Festival from 1951. This competitive festival was held in the Cliff Town Memorial Hall.
