Description
One box of programmes and prospectuses from the Dome, from 1908 to 2002. The collection includes a few press cuttings.
The programmes are largely from orchestral concerts, though there are also a number of programmes from choral concerts and solo recitals. Orchestras represented in the collection include the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Southern Philharmonic Orchestra (in concerts promoted by the Brighton Philharmonic Society) and BBC Concert Orchestra (especially from the 1950s). A number of orchestral concerts were conducted by Herbert Menges (who founded the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra).
The programmes from the early part of the collection are from a number of different organisations and events. These include the Brighton Sacred Harmonic Society, Brighton Musical Festival and the Brighton Society of Symphonic Players (often billed as "The Symphonic Players"). The latter is particularly prominent in the late 1920s and 1930s part of the collection, and includes programmes from orchestral concerts and recitals. From the 1950s onwards, the collection is dominated by programmes and prospectuses from the Brighton Philharmonic Society (later the Brighton and Hove Philharmonic Society). These include details of orchestral concerts – from either the local orchestras or from visiting London orchestras – and solo recitals, promoted by the organisation.
