Description
A bound volume containing tickets, programmes and wordbooks for the four morning and three evening performances given between 23 and 26 September 1828 as the Third Yorkshire Musical Festival.
The morning performances consisted of sacred repertory and took place in York Minster. The evening events, held in the Concert Room, York, were two-part vocal performances, with orchestral overtures/symphonies at the beginning of each act and occasional instrumental solos.
Bound after the programme for each concert is a press report/review of the event. The volume begins with an extended historical introduction to the Festival (also seemingly taken from a press source and addressing the social context for the Festival tradition) and concludes with an overall review of the 1828 event, including a financial statement.
The volume also includes lists of the Officers, Stewards and Committee for the Festival, Regulations for the event, an illustration of the View of York Minster (two versions), and a Plan of the Cathedral.
There are lists of the orchestral and choral ensembles – led by Mr F Cramer and Mr Mori and conducted by Mr Greatorex – and a record of the following vocal soloists:
Madame Catalani, Madame Caradori, Miss Stephens, Mrs W. Knyvett, Madame Stockhausen and Miss Paton; Mr Braham, Mr Vaughan, Mr Phillips, Mr E. Taylor, Mr W. Knyvett, Mr Terrail and Signor de Begnis.
The information regarding the vocal soloists is repeated in the programmes for each of the evening concerts, where it is supplemented by a list of the principal instrumental performers.
