Collection name Worcester Musical Festival (1905)

Description A prospectus with programmes for the morning and evening performances given between 10 and 15 September 1905 as the Worcester Music Festival/Three Choirs Festival no. 182, held as part of a bound volume.

Following a Grand Opening Service given on 10 September, morning and evening performances were given each day from 12 to 14 September. A Grand Closing Service was given on 15 September.

With the exception of the evening performance on 13 September – given in the Public Hall, Worcester – all concerts took place in the Cathedral.

12 September 1905: Elgar, The Dream of Gerontius, with Ivor Atkins, Hymn of Faith (cantata for mezzo-soprano, chorus and orchestra, composed for the festival) and Brahms, Symphony in E minor.
12 September 1905: Mozart, Requiem; Beethoven, Symphony No. 4; J.S. Bach, Come, Redeemer of our race (first performance in English); and Peter Cornelius, The Surrender of the Soul to the Everlasting Love (8-part motet).

13 September 1905: Mendelssohn, Lobgesang; Richard Strauss, Tod und Verklärung; Parry, De Profundis; and Frank, The Beatitudes (selection).
13 September 1905: Grand Concert, including overtures by Schubert and Wagner, orchestral music by Strauss and Tchaikovsky, Elgar, Introduction and Allegro for Strings, and songs performed by Mr Plunket Greene and Mr Frederic Austin.

14 September 1905: Elgar, The Apostles (conducted by the composer).
15 September 1905: Handel, The Messiah.

This document provides detailed information regarding the vocal and instrumental soloists and carries a full list of the orchestral ensemble, led by Mr W. Frye Parker and conducted by Mr Ivor Atkins.

Vocal: Madame Albani, Madame Sobrino and Miss Agnes Nicholls; Miss Muriel Foster, Miss Mildred Jones and Miss Edna Thornton; Mr John Coates, Mr William Green, Mr Andrew Black, Mr Frederic Austen, Mr Dalton Baker, Mr William Higley, and Mr Plunket Greene.
Instrumental: Dr A.H. Brewer and Dr G.R. Sinclair (organ).

There are also lists of the daily services in the Cathedral, lists of the stewards and others involved in the organization of the festival, copies of the Festival Regulations and ticket order forms.
