Description A complete set of analytical programmes for Ernst Pauer’s Six Historical Performances of Pianoforte Music, in strictly chronological order, given at Willis’s Rooms, King’s Street, London, on 20 and 27 April, 4, 11 and 18 May and 1 June 1863.

Each performance consisted entirely of solo keyboard music, divided into four sections: 1620-1720, 1720-1790, 1790-1825 and 1825-the present time.

Each programme contains critical and historical notes on the works performed, followed by biographical notes on the composers included. The programmes begin and end with one or more historical essays of a more general nature, the titles of which are given below.

20 April 1863: ‘Introductory Remarks’, ‘The Vienna School’ and ‘The Imperial Family of Austria and its Relations to Music and Musicians’.
27 April 1863: ‘Clementi and Mozart’, ‘Historical Sketch of the Sonata’ and ‘Explanation of some Antiquated Terms in Music’.
4 May 1863: ‘Johann Sebastian Bach’ and ‘Mendelssohn and his Pianoforte Works’.
11 May 1863: ‘French Music’, ‘The Beautiful in Music’ and ‘On Robert Schumann’.
18 May 1863: ‘On Musical Education’, ‘On Dances in Connexion [sic] with Pianoforte Music’ and ‘On Inspiration and its Fate’.
1 June 1863: ‘The Farewell’ and ‘Musical Instruments and their Manufacture’.
