Description
A miscellaneous collection of programmes for performances given at the Queen's Hall, London, between 1937 and 1938, with programmes for performances given at the Salzburger Festspiele of 1937 and for concerts given at miscellaneous London venues in 1937, held as the 7th of 17 bound volumes within the Westminster City Archive theatre collection.
In addition to the concert programmes, listed below, the volume includes material relating to ballet and opera performances at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo: 8, 12 and 28 July and 8 October 1937 [33-36] and 18 July 1938 [25]; and International Opera: 13 May 1938 [37]), Glyndebourne Opera (5, 6 and 9 June 1937, 4, 5, 8 and 9 Jul 1938 [26-32]) and Sadler's Wells (31 March/3 April 1937 (single document) [38].
The programmes are not bound in a strictly chronological order. Tract numbers are provided in square brackets below.
1. Queen's Hall Concerts
The majority of these programmes include words, notes (some of which are analytical and contain musical examples) and information about the principal performers (including photographs and lists of the orchestral ensemble).
16 and 22 April 1937: Salzburg Mozart Orchestra conducted by Bernhard Paumgarten [21 and 20]. The concert on 16 April featured the pianists Heinz and Robert Scholz and that on 22 was described as Queen Charlotte's 5th Annual Festival Concert.
26 May and 2 and 14 June 1937 and 19 and 27 May and 3 and 10 June 1938: London Music Festival concerts nos. 1, 3 and 5 and nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6 given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Arturo Toscanini [1-3 and 11-14].
Friday 25 June [1937]: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Artur Schnabel (piano), conducted by Bruno Walter [24].
30 October and 3 November 1937: BBC Symphony Orchestra concerts with the BBC Chorus, conducted by Arturo Toscanini [8 and 9].
8/9 November 1937: Courtauld-Sargent Concert (9th series) with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Artur Schnabel (piano), conducted by Malcolm Sargent (single document) [10].
Saturday 20 November [1937]: Master Pianoforte Series by Vitya Vronsky and Victor Babin [4].
2 December 1937 and 10 March 1938: Royal Philharmonic Society concerts no. 5 and 10 (126th season), given by the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Thomas Beecham [6 and 7], including the first performance of Boccherini, Sinfonia Funebra in B flat (in 1938).
2 April 1938: London Symphony Orchestra with Rachmaninoff (piano), conducted by Thomas Beecham [5].
2. Salzburger Festspiele (1937)
Programmes with notes/plot synopsis for the following operatic productions, given by the Wiener Philharmoniker and the chorus of the Wiener Staatsoper (conductors in parenthesis: Mozart, Die Zauberflote (Toscanini); Mozart, Don Giovanni (Bruno Walter); Mozart, Le Nozze di Figaro (Bruno Walter); and Beethoven, Fidelio (Toscanini) [15-18]
27 and 29 August 1937, Festspielhaus: Siebentes/Achtes Festkonzert/Beethoven, Symphony No. 9/Brahms, given by the Wiener Philharmoniker directed by W. Furtwangler/Toscanini (with words and notes) [19b and 19a, bound in reverse chronological order].
29 August 1937, Dom: Sechstes Domkonzert, Mozart, Requiem, directed by Joseph Messner (with words and notes) [19].
3. Miscellaneous London venues
Friday 29 October [1937] and Thursday 17 March [1938], Grotrian Hall/Aeolian Hall: Pianoforte Recitals by Moura Lympany/Louis Kentner (handbills with photograph) [23 and 23a].
Wednesday 8 December [1937], Aeolian Hall: Recital of Works for Two Pianofortes given by Heinz and Robert Scholz (with Analytical Notes) [22].
