Description
A collection of prospectuses and programmes for performances given at the Winter Gardens, Bournemouth in 1947 and 1948 and for four performances given at other venues in Bournemouth and Christchurch between 1948 and 1949, held within a folder of handwritten and printed correspondence relating to Ms Maisie Aldridge and forming part of the extended sequence of material relating to the Wessex Philharmonic Orchestra, housed by the library of the Royal College of Music (see also boxes M39 and M40 and other items at shelf mark 26D).
The collection also includes a handbill announcement, with programme, for a concert given by the Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra (conducted by Rudolf Schwarz) at the Royal Albert Hall, London on 24 October 1948.

October and December 1947 and February, May and August 1948: Bournemouth Municipal Orchestra, conducted by Rudolf Schwarz (prospectuses with programmes). The document for October 1947 includes notes on the orchestra, on the conductor and on the newly opened Winter Gardens Theatre.
Also held are programmes, with Analytical Notes by Lionel Budden, for Symphony Concerts given this ensemble between January and March 1948, with the following soloists:
1 January 1948: Campoli (violin).
8 January 1948: William Pleeth (cello).
25/26 March 1948: Alfred Blumen (piano).
31 March 1948: Marie Wilson (violin), including the first English performance of Hans Gal, Lilliburlero (Improvisations on a Martial Melody).
2. Miscellaneous performances
26 and 28 March [1948], Pavilion, Bournemouth: Light Orchestral Concerts, given by the augmented Pavilion Theatre Orchestra, with Harold Coombs (organ), conducted by Byron Brooke (single document). These concerts also featured Janet Davis and Gwyn Morris (26 March) and Leyland White and Reginald White (28 March).
22 April [1948], Palace Court Theatre, Westover Road, Bournemouth: Recital in aid of the War Victims of Europe, given by the Armstrong Trio (Cecil White, Edward Armstrong and Arthur Coleman) with Evelyn Amey (piano) (handbill).
17 December 1948, Westover, 4 Portarlington Road, Bournemouth: Pianoforte Recital by Jeanne Manchon-Theis (with biographical note).
1948-49, King's Arms Hotel, Christchurch: Second Season of the Christchurch and District Music Society 2nd season (prospectus, including lists of the President and other committee members of the Society and carries information regarding subscription).

Collections Overview
Founded in 1883, the RCM Library primarily supports the performance, study and research of RCM members. It is also open to the public for reference and research. It contains some 300,000 items, including significant collections of early printed and manuscript material from the 16th to 19th centuries, given to the College upon its foundation, specifically the Libraries of the Sacred Harmonic Society and of the Concerts of Ancient Music. Donations since have included autographs of composers of international renown, amongst them Beethoven, Chopin, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, as well as manuscripts and archives of major British composers. Although a British bias is apparent, the collection also has significant German and Italian manuscripts and early printed holdings. Later acquisitions of printed music include large quantities of out-of-print material, and sizeable collections of performance sets. Audio-visual holdings and the RCM's own sound archive's are also extensive.
