Collection Description

Collection name Wesleyan Methodist Choirs (1904, 1908)
Unique identifier C.20.ss. (1, 3.)
Description Programmes of the Tunes, Hymns, and Anthems to be used at the thirty-sixth and fortieth Annual Service of Song given by the Wesleyan Methodist Choirs of Northumberland and Durham, in the Town Hall, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, on 26 October 1904 and 28 October 1908. Also, the programme for the First Festival of the United Choirs of the Whitby and Darlington District Wesleyan Methodist Choir Union, held on 25 March 1908 in the Town Hall, Middlesbrough.

All three performances consisted of selections of English sacred vocal music, including solos, choral pieces (anthems and choruses) and congregational hymns. All programmes include the words for the solo pieces and the vocal scores (with organ accompaniment) for the choral and congregational numbers.

The documents relating to the Newcastle performances were obviously sent out to choirs in advance, for rehearsal purposes. As a result, they include a list of ‘Directions to Choirs’ and an accompanying letter from Charles Bowes. They also provide a list of the names and addresses of the Executive Committee (back cover). The Middlesbrough document includes only the names and addresses of the Hon. Treasurer and Hon. Secretaries.

Both of the Newcastle performances were conducted by Mr John B. Bowes with Mr Charles F. Bowes (organ). That in Middlesbrough was conducted by R.G. Thompson with Felix Corbett (organ).

The following soloists are also listed.

26 October 1904: Miss Florry Roscoe (soprano) and Mr R.R. Greenwell (tenor).
28 October 1908: Mrs Norman Snowball (soprano), Mr Monaghan (tenor) and Mr John Walker (violin).
