Description
A colllection of programme books for the annual Vellore Midlands Concert, given by the Midlands Youth Orchestra at the Town Hall, Birmingham between 1971 and 1980 (missing 1979).
Also, a souvenir programme for the Earl Mountbatten Memorial Concert given by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at the Winter Gardens, Bournemouth on 9 October 1980. This concert featured John Lill (piano) and was conducted by George Hurst.
The Vellore Concerts were two-part performances of nineteenth and twentieth-century orchestral (and occasionally choral) repertory, given in aid of the Vellore Christian Medical College and Hospital, South India. All programmes include historical, descriptive and biographical notes, photographs and a list of the orchestral ensemble.
During the interval of these concerts, an address was given by a representative of the Friends of Vellore. The programmes carry information regarding this organization and about the individual giving the address.
The performances were conducted by James Langley, with the soloists listed below. From 1973, Stephen Williams is listed as Associated Conductor, and Blyth Major is cited throughout as Musical Director (and founder of the Midland Youth Orchestra).
The programme notes are provided by Aubrey Morley and Owen Toller (1971-73 only).
13 November 1971: Martino Tirimo (piano).
11 November 1972: Alicija Fiderkiewicz (piano).
17 November 1973: Gordon Hardman (piano).
