Collection Description

Collection name University of Oxford: Keble College (1882-1927)
Unique identifier G.A.Oxon 8o 786
Description A partially incomplete set of programmes with words for the annual concerts given under the auspices of Keble College Musical Society between 1882 and 1909 (missing those for 1886, 1892, 1897, 1901 and 1904). Also, programmes for four Eights' Week Concerts given in 1920, 1922, 1925 and 1927. All programmes are held loosely within a single package.

The Musical Society concerts were conducted by W. H. Allchin (1882), Frederick Iliffe (1885), C. H. Lloyd (1887–91), Basil Harwood (1893–1903), Mr F. Shaw (1905–1906) and Mr H. G. Ley (1907–09). They began as two-part vocal and choral concerts but gradually introduced an increasing amount of instrumental and orchestral repertory. Particularly in the earlier years, one part of the concert was often devoted to an extended choral work (see the pieces listed below).

The Eights' Week Concerts were two-part performances of choral and orchestral repertory, with some vocal and instrumental solos.

All programmes include records of the President, Committee and Stewards for the concert. Programmes for 1885, 1889, 1891 and 1894 include a list of the orchestral ensemble and that for 1893 and for all concerts from 1895 include lists of the choral and orchestral ensembles.

There are minor handwritten corrections/annotations to certain programmes.
