Description A miscellaneous collection of programmes and wordbooks for performances given under the auspices of the University of Nottingham Music Society between 1956 and 1971, including choral and orchestral concerts given by the University Orchestra in the Great Hall and Festivals of Lessons and Carols given at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Nottingham.

Also, a programme with notes for a performance given by the Hirsch String Quartet on 6 November 1957 in the Music Studio of the School of Music, Beeston Lane.

1. Great Hall
All of these performances featured the University Orchestra. The Symphony/Orchestral Concerts were conducted by Basil Smallman, who was assisted by Ivor Keys in directing the Christmas Concerts. The performance of Haydn, The Creation (7 May 1961) and the two Spring Concerts were given with the University Choir and conducted by Frank M. Laming, who appeared as an additional conducted on 22 March 1959.

Programmes for concerts featuring the University/Cantata Choir (see below) incorporate the words for the choral pieces.

9 December 1956: Christmas Concert, with the Cantata Choir.
28 February 1957: Symphony Concert.
5 May 1957: Spring Concert.
1 March 1958: Symphony Concert.
4 May 1958: Spring Concert.
22 March 1959: Orchestral Concert, including the first performance of Basil Smallman, Passacaglia for orchestra (with notes).
13 December 1959: Christmas Concert, with the University Choir.
27 February 1960: Symphony Concert.
25 February 1961: Orchestral Concert.
7 May 1961: Haydn, The Creation.
10 December 1961: Christmas Concert given by the University Choir Orchestra (with notes).
10 March 1962: Symphony Concert, including the first performance of B. Smallman, Concertante for 3 solo violas, harp and string orchestra (with notes).


2. Festivals of Lessons and Carols
A collection of programmes with words for the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols, given at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Nottingham on 10 December 1957, 16 December 1958, 15 December 1959, 13 December 1960, 12 December 1961, 11 December 1962, 9 December 1969 and 14 December 1971.
