Description A collection of material relating to concerts, lectures and services given at the University of Nottingham between 1954 and 1980, the majority relating to concerts given between 1954 and 1957.

1. Concert programmes
Unless otherwise stated below, these performances took place in the Great Hall of the University. The programmes for February 1955 relate to concerts given as part of the Bach Festival and include various advertisements for other performances given as part of the same event.

28 and 29 June 1954: Aristophanes, The Birds, with incidental music composed, arranged and directed by Frank Laming, performed by Douglas Kippax and Austin Scott (flute), Thelma Marion and Adam Thomas (oboe), Donald Casson (bassoon), William George (cello), Edna Lake (double bass) and John Moore (vocal).

24 February 1955: Maurice Eisenberg (cello) and Ivor Keys (piano).

25 February 1955: Choral and Orchestral Concert including Bach, Magnificat, with Pauline Brockless (soprano), Joan Gray (alto), Llewellyn John (tenor) and Geoffrey Walls (bass), Leonard Friedman (violin), Richard Adeney (flute) and Millicent Silver (harpsichord), the University Cantata Choir and the Kalmar Orchestra, conducted by Ivor Keys (with a list of the orchestral ensemble).

17 March 1955: University of Nottingham Music Society Symphony Concert, given by the University Orchestra, led by David Gray and conducted by Basil Smallman, with Ivor Keys (piano).

20 March 1955: Spring Concert, given by the University Choir and Orchestra, led by David Gray and conducted by Frank M. Laming, with Elsie Morrison (soprano), Anne Wood (alto), Andrew Gold (tenor) and Stanley Clarkson (bass). This was a concert of music by Haydn, including a chorus from ‘The Return of Tobias’, Symphony No. 99 in E flat and the Mass in D minor (‘Nelson’).

11 December 1955: University of Nottingham Music Society Christmas Concert, featuring the University Orchestra (led by Alan Kimberley and conducted by Basil Smallman) and the University Cantata Choir (conducted by Ivor Keys) (with wordbook). This was a two-part concert combining Renaissance choral music and predominantly twentieth-century orchestral repertory.

6 and 11 February 1956, Music Studio, School of Music: ‘In Honour of Mozart’, consisting entirely of chamber music by Mozart, the first given by the Wang String Quartet (Alfred Wang, Stanley Popperwell, Gordon Mutter and George Issac) and including the string quartets K.428, 499 and 590. The second was given by the New Edinburgh Quartet (Robert Cooper, Anne Crowden, Christopher Martin and Joan Dickson) with Nannie Jamieson (viola) and combined the string quartets K. 515 and 516 with a Duo in B flat for Violin and Viola, K.424. The first programme includes very brief historical notes on each of the works performed; the second on only the quintet K.516.

26 February 1956: A choral-orchestral concert given by the University Choir and University Orchestra, conducted by Frank M. Laming with Alan Kimberley (violin), including overtures by Beethoven and Mendelssohn and Brahms, A Song of Destiny (words).


2. Lecture series (prospectuses)
October-December 1957: ‘Romanticism’, lectures and recital series including the following musical performances, given at various venues within the University of Nottingham:
29 October 1957, Great Hall: Schubert and Hugo Wolf Lieder, given by Ilse Wolf (soprano) and Martin Isepp (piano).
31 October 1957, Lecture Hall, Portland Building: The Golden Age of Pianoforte Music, an illustrated lecture given by Ivor C.B. Keys (Professor and Head of the Department of Music).
6 November 1957, Music Studio, Department of Music: Element Quartet (Ernest Element, Kenneth Page, Dorothy Hemming and Oliver Brookes), with Kathleen Walker (cello), including extracts from Haydn’s quartets on the ‘Seven Last Words’, Schumann, String Quartet in A minor, op. 41 and Schubert, Quintet in C.

January-March [no year], Portland Building Lecture Hall: The Seventeenth Century, special lecture series, including two concerts arranged by the Department of Music, the programmes for which are described but not listed in full.
23 January, Great Hall: sacred music, ‘including choral works by Monteverdi, Buxtehude, Blow and Purcell, and organ music by Frescobaldi and Pachelbel’, given by the University Chapel Choir and String Orchestra, conducted by Basil Smallman with Ivor Keys (organ).
17 March, Music Studio: ‘operatic and ensemble music by J.W. Franck, Muffat and Alessandro Scarletti [sic]’, given by April Cantelo (soprano) and John Carol Case (baritone) with the University String Orchestra directed by Frank M. Laming.

Also held are prospectuses for series of Public Lectures given during the autumn terms of 1955, 1957, 1960 and 1971. During the 1960 series, Professor A.J.B. Hutchings gave a lecture entitled ‘The Present State of Music in England’ (11 November).


3. Additional material
Orders of Service for the University Services held in the Great Hall on 3 October 1967, 5 October 1971, 6 October 1974 and 10 October 1976. Each of these documents contains the words for the various prayers, readings and hymns said/sung during these services.
