Collection name Unicorn Opera (1971-75)

Description Programmes with notes for four productions of Handel operas presented by Unicorn Opera and given at the Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon between 1971 and 1974. Also, a further programme (with notes) for a production given by the same group at the Kenton Theatre, Henley-on-Thames in September 1975.

All productions were conducted by Nicholas Kraemer.

A number of the programmes provide a list of the instrumental/orchestral ensemble, although it is not until 1973 that this is named as the Raglan Players. The vocal soloists are listed below.

14-19 September 1971: Jillian Crowe, Yvonne Fuller, Christina Clarke, John Angelo Messana, Annette Thompson and Willoughby Pountney.

12-17 September 1972: Arminio, with John Angelo Messana, Norma Burrowes, Jillian Crowe, Annette Thompson, Robert Carpenter Turner, Neil Jenkins and Linda Hirst.

8-15 September 1973: Tolomeo, given by John Angelo Messana, Felicity Lott, Hazel Holt, Annette Thompson and Malcolm King.

6-14 September 1974: Ariadne in Crete, given by Felicity Lott, Sydna Withington, Annette Thompson, Linda Hirst, John Angelo Messana and Christopher Blades.

3-6 September 1975: Lotario, given by Eiddwen Harrhy, John Angelo Messana, Neil Jenkins, Sydna Withington, Linda Hirst, Christopher Booth Jones, Christopher Ilsley and Gary Webb.

Collections Overview The Gerald Coke Handel Collection is an internationally important collection of material relating to Handel and his contemporaries, including manuscripts, printed books and music, libretti, paintings and engravings, memorabilia, art works and ephemera. The Handel collection is open for research Wednesday-Friday, and the display room (with access to recorded music) is open with the rest of the museum Tuesday-Sunday 10-6.
