Collection name Sunday Evening Concerts and Sunday Concerts Society (1898-99)
Unique identifier d.484.e
Description A collection of analytical programmes for the Sunday Evening Concerts, afterwards concerts of the Sunday Concert Society, given at the Queen’s Hall, Langham Place, between 18 September 1898 and 12 November 1899, under the management of Robert Newman.

Where no other indication is given below, these were performances of vocal and instrumental solos, accompanied by Percy Pitt, with a range of choral and orchestral works.

Up until the end of May 1899, the majority of these concerts were given by the Queen’s Hall Orchestra with the Queen’s Hall Choral Society, conducted by Henry Wood (18 September-4 December 1898) and George Riseley (11 December 1898-April 1899). From October 1899, the concerts were given by the Queen’s Hall Quintet (Messrs. A. Fransella, M. Gomez, D. Lalande, E. F. James, and A. Borsdorf) with H.C. Tonking (organ).

All programmes include historical and analytical notes by Edgar F. Jacques. Many also provide a wordbook and contain a large number of advertisements, typically including an announcement with programme for the next concert in this series and for the Saturday Afternoon Concerts given at the same venue.
