Collection Description

Collection name Sunday Evening Chamber Concerts (1896-97)
Unique identifier d.484.f
Description An incomplete set of analytical programmes for the first series of Sunday Evening Chamber Concerts, given at the Queen’s (Small) Hall, Langham Place between December 1896 and April 1897, under the management of Robert Newman.

All concerts were given by the Queen’s Hall String Quartet (Senor Arbos, Mr Ferdinand Weist-Hill, Mr Alfred Hobday and Mr W.H. Squire) and typically featured both a vocal and instrumental soloist (listed below), accompanied by Percy Pitt.

The concerts opened and closed with chamber works for strings. In between were solo pieces, given either by the listed soloists or by a member of the quartet. The repertory was drawn largely from the works of nineteenth-century German composers.

All programmes carry historical and analytical notes by Edgar F. Jacques which incorporate the words for the vocal pieces. They also contain a large number of advertisements (with programme listings) for other Queen’s Hall Concerts, typically including the next performance in this series, the Sunday Afternoon Orchestral Concerts and the Saturday Promenade Concerts. There are also advertisements, with programmes, for performances given by the Queen’s Hall Choral Society on 25 December 1896 and 27 May 1897.

The programmes for the concerts given on 21 and 28 February and 7 and 21 March include a prospectus for three morning and three evening concerts given by the Lamoureux Orchestra (Paris) between 22 and 27 March 1897. These provide preliminary programmes, information regarding subscription and transcripts of press reviews of the orchestra’s last appearance in London.
