Description
Analytical Programmes for the six concerts given by the Quartett Association at Willis's Rooms, London, during their 1852 and 1853 seasons, bound as two volumes (one per season).
These were performances of instrumental chamber music, including a number of works being given for the first time.
With the exception of the last concert in each season (for which a larger chamber ensemble was employed), concerts were given by a string quartet of MM. Sainton, H. Cooper, Hill and Piatti, with the additional performers listed below.
All programmes include notes (with musical examples) by G. A. Macfarren.
Volume 1 (1852)
28 April: Sterndale Bennett (piano), including the first English performance of Cherubini, Grand Quartett in E flat.
12 May: Mademoiselle Clauss (piano).
28 May: Herr Lüders (piano) and Signor Bottesini (double bass), including the first performance of Lüders, Trio in E flat and Bottesini, New Solo (composed expressly for this occasion).
9 June 1852: Madame Pleyel (piano), including the first English performance of Cherubini, Quartett in C, no. 2.
23 June 1852: M. Prudent (piano).
30 June 1852: Madame Pleyel (piano).
Volume 2 (1853)
14 April: Miss Arabella Goddard (piano), including the first English performance of Hummel, Quartet, no. 1 in C.
28 April: Herr Pauer (piano), including the first performance of E. Pauer, Sonata in A for Pianoforte and Violin.
12 May: Mademoiselle Clauss (piano)
26 May: Mrs F. B. Jewson (piano) and Signor Bottessini (double bass). The viola parts for this concert were taken by Messrs Webb and Mr Boileau.
9 June: Miss Arabella Goddard (piano).
23 June: Mr Benedict (piano), including the first performance of Benedict, Sonata in E minor.
