Description
A bound volume containing programmes for 14 performances given at various English venues – principally St. James's Hall – between 1873 and 1900, all of which included music composed by William Sterndale Bennett.
Programmes are bound chronologically but are ordered here by venue, with London venues followed by provincial ones.
1. London
- Queen's Hall
28 March 1900: Royal Amateur Orchestral Society (28th season), no. 3, conducted by Ernest Ford (with words, notes and a list of the orchestra ensemble). This document includes a list of the members of the Society.
- St. James's Hall
All programmes incorporated the words of the vocal pieces performed. Programmes up to and include that on 11 March 1882 also include historical and analytical notes (with musical examples). Programmes for the two concerts given by the Royal Academy of Music provide lists of the subscribers to the concerts and detailed information regarding the Academy.
9 January 1873 and 26 March 1874: British Orchestral Society (1st season, no. 3 and 2nd season, no 5), conducted by George Mount (with lists of the orchestral ensemble).
1 December 1873 and 31 January and 14 February 1876: Monday Popular Concerts (16th and 18th seasons), conducted by Julius Benedict and Mr Zerbini (31 January only).
21 January 1882: Saturday Popular Concert (24th season).
11 March 1882: Walter Macfarrens's Orchestral Concerts, no. 2, conducted by Macfarren, including the first London performance of Piatti, Fantasia Romantica for Violoncello.
28 June 1882: Royal Academy of Music Students' Orchestral Concert, conducted by Mr William Shakespeare
31 May 1883: Mr Henry Leslie's Choir, conducted by Alberto Randegger, including the first complete performance of Bennett, Motet for Double Choir, In Thee, O Lord'.
20 May 1887: Royal Academy of Music Students' Chamber Concert, conducted by Mr Barnby.
2. Non-London venues
26 April 1859 [Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool]: Liverpool Philharmonic Society 5th Subscription Concert, conducted by Mr J. Zeugheer Herrmann (with words and a list of the orchestral ensemble). The concert included Sterndale Bennett, The May Queen (conducted by the composer).
20 May 1873, King's College Chapel, Cambridge: Choir Benevolent Fund Grand Choral Festival, conducted by Sir Sterndale Bennett, Sir George Elvey, Sir John Goss and Dr Garrett (with words and brief notes).
12 September 1888, Hereford Cathedral: Morning Concert given as part of the Hereford Musical Festival, conducted by Mr Langdon Colborne, including Bennett, The Woman of Samaria (with words and a list of orchestral ensemble). Bound with this programme is a prospectus (with programmes) for the event.
