Description A bound volume containing a miscellaneous collection of concert programmes for performances involving William Sterndale Bennett (in person or as a featured composer) given at various London venues between 1859 and 1912, including programmes for the Philharmonic Society (1869-88) and the Bach Choir (1877-83) and for the Official Opening of the Royal Academy of Music, York Gate (1912). Also, programmes for three miscellaneous concerts.

Programmes are bound as listed.

1. Miscellaneous concerts
6 May 1859, St. James's Hall: programme and wordbook for Handel, The Messiah given for the Royal Society of Musicians, conducted by Professor Sterndale Bennett. This document begins with a historical note on the Society and includes detailed information regarding its Patrons, Subscribers and Members.
21 February 1868, St. James's Hall: programme and wordbook for Sterndale Bennett, The Woman of Samaria/The May Queen, conducted by Mr W. G. Cusins.
3 July 1872, Willis's Rooms, King Street: programme with words for the Jubilee Dinner of the Royal Academy of Music. This document begins with a historical notes regarding the Academy and provides detailed lists of the staff and students.


2. Philharmonic Society
Programmes, with words and Analytical and Historical Notes (including musical examples) for performances given at St. James's Hall, London between 1869 and 1888. Certain of these programmes include lists of the orchestral ensemble, as well as records of the Members, Associates and other officers of the Philharmonic Society.
Concerts were conducted by Mr W. G. Cusins (1869-80), C. V. Stanford (1884), Arthur Sullivan (1885-87) and Frederic H. Cowen (1888).
28 June 1869: (57th season, no. 8).
8 July 1872: (60th season, no. 8), including the first performance of W. S. Bennett, Orchestral Prelude to the Music of Sophocles, 'Ajax'.
18 March 1875: (63rd season, no. 1). In Honour of William Sterndale Bennett, including the first performance of a number of works by him.
20 February 1879: (67th season, no. 2).
19 February 1880: (68th season, no. 2), including the first performance of Harold Thomas, Concert Overture (MS), 'Mountain, Lake and Moorland'.
6 March 1884: (72nd season, no. 2).
6 May 1885: (73rd season, no. 5), including Dvorak, Concerto, Pianoforte in G minor (conducted by the composer).
15 April 1886: (74th season, no. 4).
9 June 1887: (75th season, no. 6), including the first performance of Randegger, Prayer of Nature (Bryon), conducted by the composer.
19 April 1888: (76th season, no. 3), including the first performance of Widor, Music to 'A Walpurgis-Night' (conducted by the composer) and the first London performance of Prout, Scena, The Song of Judith (conducted by the composer).


3. The Bach Choir
Programmes with words and notes for five performances given by the Bach Choir between 1877 and 1883, conducted by Otto Goldschmidt. None of these programmes record the venue of the performance.
25 April 1877: Miscellaneous Concert, including the first English performances of J. S. Bach, Sacred Cantata, 'Ein' feste Burg' and Niels W. Gade, Comala. Also, the first Bach Choir performance of W. S. Bennett, Motet, 'In Thee, O Lord'.
14 May 1879: Miscellaneous Concert, including the first performance of Brahms, 'Es ist das Heil', and the first London performances of J. S. Bach, Double Chorus, 'Now shall the grace' and Max Bruch, The Banquet of the Phaeacians.
3 March 1881: 12th Public Concert (6th season), including the first English performance of Schumann, Requiem for Mignon.
16 February 1882: Fifteenth Public Concert.
28 April 1883: Nineteenth Public Concert, being Bach, Mass in B minor.


4. Royal Academy of Music, York Gate
22 June 1912: programme with words for the Official Opening by his Royal Highness Prince Arthur of Connaught. This document includes a list of the orchestral ensemble, historical notes and photographs on the Royal Academy of Music and detailed lists of the Patrons and staff of the organization. Pasted into the programme is a typed letter to Sterndale Bennett from Alexander Mackenzie, concerning a similar concert held on 10 May 1894.
