Description
A bound volume containing the programmes and wordbooks for the four morning and three evening performances given at Leeds Town Hall between 8 and 11 September 1858 as the Leeds Musical Festival, conducted by William Sterndale Bennett.
The morning performances consisted principally of sacred choral repertory (see below) whilst the evening events were all described as Miscellaneous Concerts.
The programme for the first morning performance includes lists of the Patrons, the choral and the orchestral ensembles and records the principal vocal and instrumental performers engaged (see below). There is also a note on the New Town Hall (Inaugurated 7 September 1858), which includes a section on the organ.
Vocal: Madame Clara Novello, Mrs Sunderland, Madame Weiss, Miss Helene Walker and Madame Piccolomini; Miss Dolby, Miss Palmer, Miss Crossland, Miss Freeman and Madame Alboni; Mr Sims Reeves, Mr Wilbye Cooper, Mr Inkersall and Signor Giuglini; Mr Weiss, Mr Santley, Mr William Winn, Mr Hinchcliffe, Signor Rossi and Signor Vialetti.
Miss Arabella Goddard (piano), Messrs Sainton and H. Blagrove (violin), Mr Webb (viola), Mr C. Harper (horn), Mr T. Harper (trumpet), Mr Williams (clarinet), Mr Waetzig (bassoon), Mr Lucas (cello), and Mr Howell (double bass), with Mr Henry Smart and Mr William Spark (organ).

9 September: Rossini, Stabat Mater; J. S. Bach, Grosse Passions Musik (selections from); Beethoven, The Mount of Olives (with some brief notes on the Bach).
10 September: Haydn, The Seasons/Handel, Israel in Egypt.
11 September: Handel, The Messiah.
Evening
8, 9 and 10 September: the concert on 8 September included the first performance of W.Sterndale Bennett, The May Queen.
