Description
A bound volume containing a miscellaneous selection of programmes for the Crystal Palace Saturday Concerts, given at the Crystal Palace between 1875 and 1888. Bound at the end of the volume is a Catalogue of the Principal Instrumental and Choral Works performed at the Saturday Concerts from October 1855 to May 1886.
All concerts were conducted by August Manns and all programmes carry words and historical and analytical notes (with musical examples). From November 1885, they also include a list of the orchestral ensemble.
6 March 1875: Programme selected from the works of the late Sir W. Sterndale Bennett, given by Miss Antoinette Sterling and Mr Vernon Rigby (vocal), Miss Agnes Zimmermann (piano) and students of the Royal Academy of Music. The concert began with 'An Elegy for Orchestra on the Death of Sir Sterndale Bennett, composed and dedicated with deepest reverence to his memory, by his pupil T. Wingham' and the programme includes extended historical notes on Bennett.
2 November 1878: Mendelssohn Commemoration Concert, given by Madame Lemmens-Sherrington and M. Candidus (vocal) and Madame Montigny-Rémaury (piano), including the first performance of Symphony in F minor for String Orchestra.
15 February 1879: Mrs Osgood and Mr Shakespeare (vocal) and Madame Arabella Goddard (piano), including the first English performance of Dvorak, Slavonian Dances.
11 October 1879: Mrs Osgood (vocal) and Madame Montigny-Remaury and Miss Marie Wurm (piano), including the first English performance of H. Hofmann, Frithjof, A Symphony for Full Orchestra.
13 March: Miss Thekla Friedlander and Mr Edward Lloyd (vocal) and Herr Hugo Heermann (violin), including the first English performance of Goetz, Concerto for Violin and Orchestra and Svensden, Rhapsodie Norvegienne, No. 4.
19 June 1880: Special Concert, with Mademoiselle Zara Thalberg (vocal) and M. Joseph Wieniawski (piano).
4 December 1880: Mademoiselle Louise Pyk (vocal) and Mademoiselle Janotha (piano)
3 December 1881: Miss Annie Marriott and Miss Edith Millar (vocal) and Miss Agnes Bartlett (piano).
18 February 1882: Miss Mary Davies and Mr W H. Brereton (vocal) and Miss Agnes Zimmermann (piano), including the first English performance of C. Villiers Stanford, Selection from 'The Veiled Prophet'.
24 February 1883: Miss Edith Santley (vocal) and Herr Hausmann (cello).
3 November 1883: Miss Hilda Wilson, Mr Charles Chilley and Mr Santley (vocal), the Crystal Palace Choir and Mr Carrodus (violin). In Memoriam, Felix Mendelssohn.
7 November 1885: Madame Valleria (vocal), Mr Carl Jung (violin) and Messrs Alfred Wells and A. Tootill (flute), including the first performance of Ferdinand Praeger, Symphonic Poem, 'Leben und Liebe, Kampf und Sieg'.
16 October 1886: Mademoiselle Ella Russell (vocal) and Fanny Davies (piano), including the first English performance of Massenet, Spanish Ballet, from 'Le Cid'.
25 February 1888: Madame Patey (vocal) and Fanny Davies (piano).
