Description A collection of playbills/souvenir programmes for four Gala/State Performances given under the auspices of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden between 1907 and 1939, arranged chronologically as tracts 3-6 of a bound volume.

Tracts 3-5 consist of illustrated playbills (with programmes and indications of performers) printed on silk. Tract 6 is a souvenir programme, including detailed lists of the solo and orchestral performers.

11 June 1907: Gala Performance, in honour of the visit of their Majesties the King and Queen of Denmark. This was a three-part performance featuring the first acts of [Puccini], Madame Butterfly and La Boheme (conducted by Signor Campanini) and selections from the first two scenes of the third act of [Wagner], Die Meistersinger (conducted by Hans Richter).

27 May 1908: Gala Performance, in honour of the visit of the President of the French Republic, conducted by Signor Campanini. This was a two-part concert consisting of selections from [Bizet] I Pescatori di Perle (Act I) and [Gounod] Faust (Act II).

11 May 1914: State Performance, in honour of the visit of their Majesties King and Queen of Denmark. This was a three-part concert consisting of selections from [Verdi], Tosca (Act I), [Puccini] , La Boheme (Act I) and [Verdi], Aida (Act II/ii), conducted by Giorgi Polacco, Albert Coates and Arthur Nikisch.

22 March 1939: Grand State Performance, in honour of the visit of President of the French Republic and Madame Lebrun. This was a two-part performance of Tchaikovsky, Sleeping Beauty, given by Vic-Wells Ballet and the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Constant Lambert. Also, Debussy, Iberia, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Thomas Beecham.
