Description Programmes with words for the first, fifth and sixth of the St James’s Hall Symphony Concerts, given on 1 May and 15 and 22 June 1882 at St. James’s Hall, London, conducted by Charles Hallé, with Ludwig Straus (leader) and Otto Peiniger (director of the chorus).

All programmes provide detailed information regarding the vocal and instrumental soloists (see below) and include a list of the orchestral ensemble, which was drawn from Hallé’s Manchester orchestra and August Mann’s Crystal Palace ensemble.

The programmes also include extensive historical and analytical programme notes, with musical examples. These are various attributed to ‘G’ [George Grove], ‘O.B.’ and ‘C.A.B.’

1 May 1882: including Beethoven, Symphony No.9, with Miss Anna Williams, Miss Orridge, Mr Vernon Rigby and Mr Santley (vocal). Also, Rubinstein, Piano Concerto No.3 (Sophie Menter, piano) and an aria from Spohr, Jessonda performed by Mr Santley.

15 June 1882: a two-part concert culminating in Berlioz, Harold en Italie (Mr Ludwig Straus, viola). Also, Beethoven, Overture ‘Leonora’ No.3, Mendelssohn, Violin concerto (Madame Norman-Neruda) and Mozart, ‘Haffner’ Serenade.

22 June 1882: a two-part concert of Beethoven, Symphony No. 5 and Missa Solemnis, given by Madame Albandi, Miss Orridge, Mr Shakespeare and Mr Frederic King (vocal) with Mr William Hodge (organ).
