Description A collection of programmes and wordbooks for nine concerts given at St. James’s Hall, London between 1893 and 1898.

These programmes contain very occasional handwritten annotations which either provide additions or corrections to the printed material, or offer personal observations on the performance.

3 July [1893]: Madame Inverni’s Grand Morning Concert, being a two-part performance of vocal and instrumental music given by Mr Philip Newbury, Madame Inverni, Isidore de Lara and Miss Marguerite Macintyre (vocal), Mademoiselle Freddia Yrrac (violin), Mr Leo Stern (cello) and Mr Joseph Slivinski (piano), with Mr Spencer Lorraine.

30 November 1897 and 29 April 1898: Madame Blanche Marchesi’s Vocal Recitals, with Johanne Kruse (violin), conducted by Henry Bird. The performance on 29 April 1898 featured Thomas Meux (vocal).

23 October 1897: Mr N. Vert’s Second Morning Concert, being a two-part concert of vocal and instrumental music given by Miss Esther Palliser, Madame Kate Cove, Madame Alice Gomez, Miss Ada Crossley, Mr Edward Lloyd, Mr Herbert Grover, Signor Foli and Mr Andrew Black (vocal), with Mademoiselle Janotha (piano) and Monsieur Tivadar Nachez (violin), conducted by Henry Bird. This document also includes the programme for the third concert in the series, to be given on 30 October 1897.

22 November and 15 December 1897: two recitals of vocal and instrumental music by Grieg, with Madame Medora Henson (vocal) and Johannes Wolff (violin)/Madame Grieg (vocal) and Edvard Grieg (piano).

22 January [1897]: Herr Theodore Werner’s First Violin Recital, being a performance of nineteenth-century violin repertory, accompanied by Henry Bird (with analytical notes, including musical examples, by Joseph Bennett). This document contains notification of the programmes for the second through sixth performances in this series (without dates).

4 November [1898]: First Vocal Recital given by Madame Paula Ehrenbacher, with Mr Tivadar Nachez (violin), conducted by Messrs. S. Liddle and Ernest Walker.

17 March 1898: Annual Irish Ballad Concert, conducted by Henry Bird and Mr E.R. Terry, being a two-part concert of vocal repertory given by Miss Eldina Bligh, Miss Kate Flinn, Madame Enriquez, Madame Hope Glenn, Mrs Jean Hume, Mrs Hutchinson, Mr Melfort D’Alton, Mr Plunket Greene, Mr Santley and Mr Braxton Smith, with the Westminster Singers (Messrs George May, Harper Kearton, Charles Ackerman and W.H. Brereton).
