Description
A collection of programmes and wordbooks for five concerts of vocal and instrumental music, given at St. James’s Hall, London on 26 May 1892, 15 May [1893], 5 July [1894], and 10 and 14 July 1894.
The programmes for the last three of these performances include handwritten annotations detailing minor changes to the printed programmes and/or indicating those works which received an encore.
26 May 1892: Mademoiselle [Natalia] Janotha’s Piano Recital, with Miss Carlotta Elliot, Miss Marie Brema and Mr James Ley (vocal), including a set of piano pieces written by Janotha, entitled Mountain Scenes and dedicated to Clara Schumann. The programme includes a brief historical note regarding the genesis of this piece.
15 May [1893]: Mr Otto Cantor’s Grand Evening Concert with Mr James A. Bovett, Miss Stanley Lucas, Mr Joseph Claus, Madame Amy Sandon, Mr David Bispham, Miss Florence Hoskins, Madame Marian McKenzie, Ben Davies, Madame Giulia Valda, Richard Green, Miss Helen Pettican, Miss Harding and Miss Sophie Elliot (vocal), Mademoiselle Jeanne Douste de Fortis and Miss Grace Simon (piano), Mr Leo Stern (cello) and Miss Angela Vanbrugh and Max Reichel (violins), conducted by Messrs Wilhelm Ganz, Raphael Roche, Tosti, A. Romili and Otto Cantor and Miss Bessie Waugh. The concert also featured the Queen Vocal Quartette (Miss Amy Sergeant, Miss Lisa Stewart, Miss Mary Hutton and Miss Lucy Johnstone).
5 July [1894]: Mr Andrew Black’s Grand Morning Concert, with Miss Ella Russell, Mademoiselle Antoinette Trebelli, Miss Florence Monteith, Miss Esther Palliser, Madame Scalchi, Miss Clara Butt, Miss Rosa Green, Miss Hilda Wilson, Mr Barton McGuckin, Mr Herbert Grover, Mr Edwin Wareham, Mr Ben Davies, Mr Andrew Black, Mr Walter Clifford and Mr Norman Salmond (vocal), Monsieur Delafosse (piano), Monsieur Hollman (cello) and Mademoiselle Achard (harp), conducted by Signor Randegger, Mr Pitt, Signor Ducci, Mr H. Lane Wilson, Mr Wilhelm Ganz and Mrs Andrew Black. The concert also featured the Meister Glee Singers (Messrs Sexton, Hast, Forington and Norcross).
10 July 1894: Monsieur Clément’s Grand Morning Concert, being a selection from the works of Monsieur [Hermann] Bemberg, given by Madame Melba, Mademoiselle Landi, Madame Réjane, Monsieur Plancon, Mr Eugene Oudin and Monsieur Damoye (vocal), Johannes Wolff (violin) and Monsieur Mariotti (cello), conducted by Monsieur Bemberg.
14 July 1894: Miss Liza Lehmann’s Morning Concert, with Mr David Bispham, Miss Liza Lehmann, Mr J. Robertson, Madame Alice Gomez, Mr Plunket Greene and Marian McKenzie (vocal), Madame Haas and Miss Fanny Davies (piano), Mr J. Preuveneers (cello), Miss Adelaide Arnold (harp), Mr A.E. Denman (organ) and Mr Ellis Bedford (piano), conducted by Miss M.V. White, Mr Henry Bird, Mr Waddington Cooke, Mr Orlando Morgan and Mr Randegger.
